Former Industrial Factory Gets a Modern Makeover

Just steps away from the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, you’ll find the Heirloom at N.K. Hurst. Formerly, a printing company in 1906, the building was converted in 1947 into offices and corporate headquarters for the family-owned N.K. Hurst Company (c. 1938) which handled the packaging and distribution of products like dried beans, peas, lentils, beet sugar, and corn syrup for customers across the U.S., Europe, and the Pacific Rim.

This industrial-era gem—situated in the heart of a bustling downtown area with sweeping views of the Indianapolis skyline—enticed owners Rick and Lisa Hurst to transform the iconic heritage site into a chic, all-inclusive event space.

Outdoor access and natural light were must-haves; and the building’s large loading dock garage doors near the front entrance were the perfect opportunity to check all of the boxes for versatility and character, privacy, and adaptability. One 7’x10’ loading dock door was specified for a defined size to fit the old opening, paving the way for a smooth installation.

“We chose a frosted glass for the doors, which was critical due to the venue’s location and its purpose,” said Rick Hurst. “With an event venue that is close to the stadium and in a heavily trafficked area, we wanted to give guests privacy. The smoky glass provided the opacity we needed while matching The Heirloom’s vintage interior.”

The Clopay Model 904 is a sectional door that showcases a minimalist design and a balanced, proportional aesthetic. With full-view glass panels, the design provides a look that complements large, open spaces, perfect for wedding and event venues.

While Clopay Model 904 doors can be opened to enjoy balmy breezes in spring and summer, the doors also have features to reduce the chances of water and air entering between the panels in high winds and heavy rain.

The Heirloom’s 9,000 square feet offer the perfect sense of nostalgia from bygone eras. And whether guests are celebrating on the terrace, or enjoying the glittering skyline through the full-view doors, guests will share a nostalgic ambiance throughout the former N.K. Hurst Co. Inc. building—ushering in a new era of vitality for The Heirloom and the community that surrounds it.
